As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,914 people, 2,254 households, and 1,480 families residing in the town. The population density was 706.9/km (1,830.6/mi). There were 2,515 housing units at an average density of 300.6/km (778.5/mi). The racial makeup of the town was 47.09% White, 40.33% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 9.89% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.02% of the population.

There were 2,254 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% were married couples living together, 21.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.17.
